However, the mapped drive we need still not showing. Can someone provide a hint why it is not working? I saw this post and not sure if I need to delete the recreate a new GPO? Now the GP results are all okay but the map drive still no showing in the user computer upon logon Skip to main content. Find threads, tags, and users Hello, So i have created a user group policy to map a drive X only to myself.

If you are still using logon scripts follow the steps in this guide and replace them with Group Policy. The biggest challenge is just finding the time to switch them over. This FREE tool lets you get instant visibility into user and group permissions.

Quickly check user or group permissions for files, network, and folder shares. What OS version is the server running? Can you log into the server, open up command prompt and type. So it works like create plus allows updates. Using the create option does not allow updating the same object. They currently have scripts for each office, then those scripts were copied and renamed for individuals with extra and specific mappings.

Frustrating that it was permitted in the first place. You can use targeting for this. You could map a drive to a group of users based on OU, security group, site, operating system and so on. For example all users in marketing map an N drive but say you have 5 people in marketing that need to map another drive to another location. You can create a security group put these 5 users in it and create a new drive mapping policy that targets the security group. Then only members of this group will get this drive.

Hope that helps. Is there anyway that we can stop it listing in the directory? As we have over users, and its listing alot of folders in a sense. You will need to modify the ntfs permissions for each folder and only give the individual user access to it.

Is this possible? Assuming location a and location b are on different networks you could use item level targeting and map a drive based on IP address? At least, I have not found a way to make any of them run asynchronously or at VPN logon. This means that people who always work remotely and connect via VPN after local login is complete will not process those four Client Side Extensions when they connect to VPN — because the local logon event has already occurred.

If anyone has a solution that does not entail kludgey workarounds which in my opinion include use of Logon Scripts, I am all ears. If these GPPs can be pushed to local policies, and local policy processing not disabled, would that work — or would the initial logon sit there for hours waiting for all the mapping GPPs to fail before letting the user log into their computer? OK, what am I missing? If the user is in the OU that was used for item level targeting then it will get mapped.

If you set the shared and NTFS permissions up the user should not have access but would still map the drive. I did have a question regarding scalability. My enterprise has about shares that I will eventually be managing.

I currently have about We have had other misc issues with group policy mainly due to mismatched AD configurations since we had mergers and acquisitions going on but no one dedicated to figuring it out until now. I wanted to know if there was any threshold concerns with how many shortcuts one GPO manages. My thought was to create a separate policy for each of our locations that have around departmental shares to be managed and use item level targeting as we use their computer names to help identify departments for support.

I was also thinking about that from a troubleshooting perspective. That is an insane amount of shares and a security nightmare. If it was me I would try to reduce the number of shares, I typically setup only one share per department, then use security permissions to lock it down further if needed.

OP Alaskansan This person is a verified professional. GPO for drive maps works without issue on Windows 7 machines. This could have reasons like lan not fully connected, or WiFi, while the logon is happening. Without details from a full report while drives are missing, it is just guessing. If you are doing it on a slow wifi, problems like this can happen Spice 1 flag Report. You can always drop a call to a login script into GP and just map the drives in the script too.

I have tested both on WiFi and on a physical connection. Same results on both. No change. Drives still do not map.

Sometimes after a reset the link with ip doesnt work, sometimes the link with servername. Thanks a lot for your advice! From what I can tell the issue is as follows : inconsistent application of the group policies. All systems are on and have verified connection to the mapped drive's UNC path. Under Action: What is the action you set? How do you handle switches at the end of the drive map? Hi Hannah, Did you have any other suggestions?

Within this category, settings nearest the top of the report are the prevailing settings when resolving conflicts. It looks to me like your using GPO preferences to map the drive. The AD user object "hmdrv and hmdir" location can also be set with dsmod.

Thus it can be scripted. When creating drive maps it is always best to run them as the user to ensure that when variables are used they apply properly, but this also helps maintain file security set by any NTFS permissions on the files and folders.

Yes I already tried "Run in logged-on user's security context" with checked but no success. I can access shared home folder from client pc which contains user's folders.

Actually user folders are not created I'm using username variable to create users folders, no folders are being created and no mapped drives. Why do you need to have GPO to map user's home folder. I didn't create folder and I thought variable will also create folders but no folders need to be created manually. GPO preference just map the drive. Created folders and it worked. Actually I like GPO preferences to map drives because it is really easy and I can also rename label of mapped drive to hide the shared location.

Brand Representative for Microsoft. Just a quick note on this I was struggling with getting Mapped Drives to apply to a customer I took over and had scoped GPO's to security groups removing Authenticated users and could only get them to apply if I added the computer with read access. Network drive is also known as Network Attached Storage. It is a storage device on a local access network within a business or home, allowing the content can be shared with other devices on the same LAN and even remotely over the Internet.

So, in order to create a shared folder or allow other devices on the same LAN to access the content, you need to map the network drive. You can fix the mapped network drives problems by creating and running two scripts either using the Startup folder or running a task when the user signs into their account.

Then click File , click Save as , and save the text file as MapDrives.
